Chapter Text
The morning came slowly as Amelia slowly woke. For a moment she doesn't move, she just lets herself be in the moment. Just exists.
As she slowly wakes, she turns on to her side to find Monica still completely asleep, her bare back turned to Amelia with one arm under the pillow, breathing slow. Amelia had always been the one to wake first with Monica enjoying a later start to her mornings. Amelia lifts her hand to slowly trace the line of Monica’s spine before making slow, absent patterns on Monica’s back. Amelia's hand stops as she rests her hand on Monica’s waist before pressing a small kiss on her shoulder as Monica slowly starts to wake. Monica huffs a little sound with a small smile on her face as she feels Amelia plant a kiss on her shoulder.
She turns her head slightly to get a proper kiss from Amelia, leaning in and stopping as their lips brush before smiling into the kiss. The kiss is slow and unhurried, like every sleepy morning kiss they have, and allows Monica to roll on to her other side until she is fully facing Amelia, giving them little space between them. Monica brings her hand up to Amelia's face as she pulls away ever so slightly as she whispers a sleepy "morning" as they enjoy being in each other’s presence.
This was their first morning waking up together in just over a week as it had been Amelia’s weekend with Scout and then some night shifts and long surgeries that had ran late for Monica had meant they didn't see each other that much apart from some moments of free time they both had when they were both on shift at the hospital. They were still fairly new in their relationship and hadn't really defined what they really were but both knew that they were catching deep feelings for each other. Amelia had always been worried with dating as a single mother, especially since her relationship with Kai had ended largely down to Kai not wanting kids and that had broken Amelia as Scout was her whole world. But since meeting Monica, she felt like all her worries had disappeared. Monica hadn't met Scout yet but loved hearing Amelia talk about him and he made the way her light up. Amelia also saw how great Monica was with kids everyday in her jobs and how she made tough times seem a thousand times better.
"I missed you" Monica says a little sheepishly before kissing Amelia again, still unhurried and easy.
The confession made Amelia smile into the kiss before pulling back making Monica give out moan in displeasure that she ended the kiss making Amelia chuckle as she responded with "I missed you too".
Before they could do anything more, Amelia’s phone starting ringing with a call from Meredith. Amelia showed Monica her phone when Monica groaned into Amelia’s shoulder and mumbled "don't pick up, she can wait".
"I have to pick up Meredith baby, if I don't you know she will send a search party" Amelia said as she sat up and answered the call.
Monica listened to Amelia talking to Meredith as she continued to lay sleepily next to her but knew that by the sound of the conversation that they would have to get up at soon as Amelia and Meredith were close to a breakthrough in their research. As the call was nearing the end she heard Meredith through the phone say to Amelia "say good morning to Monica for me and tell her to not to make you late" which makes Amelia groan and immediately hang up on Meredith but Monica just laughs and tightens her grip around Amelia’s waist.
After a lot of contemplating, the pair finally decide to actually be functional human beings and head into work. Monica walks Amelia to her research lab where they find Meredith already going through some data. Meredith smirks as she sees the pair, when Monica pipes up proudly saying "it’s 8:52am, you have her a full 8 minutes early" before giving Amelia a kiss as she leaves.
Amelia turns to find Meredith smirking, “well you two seem to be very domestic now, have you actually talked about what you guys are yet?” Amelia knew that this question would come up, just not this quickly.
“Not yet, we haven’t really seen each other much this week due to Monica working a few night shifts and I had Scout over the weekend” Amelia said drifting off towards the end as she knows that they are in a really good place in their relationship but she doesn’t want to ruin what they already have together as it has been so good so far.
Meredith was about to respond on how Monica is definitely in a good place in the relationship but Amelia all of sudden becomes uneasy and unstable holding onto the table as Meredith grabs the bin and guides Amelia to the seat before she is sick into the bin. Meredith crouches down and guides Amelia, worried in what was happening to her sister. Amelia looks up at her with a scared face and says “I need to get a CT scan”. Meredith knows that this must have happened before if Amelia is already considering a CT scan, knowing how stubborn she can be.
Meredith pauses before asking “what’s happening Amelia? And don’t lie as I know when you are lying to me”.
Amelia takes a moment before responding, as if saying it would make it real, “I’ve been having these moments of sickness and unstableness for a few weeks now but they have always been brief and I seem to know when they are going to come as I have had headaches but this one has come out of nowhere” Amelia said with tears starting to fall down her cheeks “I didn’t want to say anything at first as it would make it real and everything has been going well with Monica and I don’t want to put anything onto her” she continued not knowing quite what to say or do.
Meredith wiped a tear from Amelia’s cheek, getting emotional herself and taking a moment before responding, “well why don’t we get a CT scan and then go from there and see what the results say, but whatever the results are we will tell Monica as even though you both haven’t talked about your relationship and feelings, I know that she already loves so much and that she will stick with you with whatever happens, okay?”
“Okay” Amelia says quietly as she nods, knowing that not telling Monica would be worse.
Later that day, they managed to get a slot for Amelia to get a CT scan. While Amelia was in the machine, Monica found Meredith in the tech room not knowing what was happening looking for Amelia as she wanted a consult and Meredith immediately panicked making the paediatric surgeon confused. “I’m just looking for Amelia to see if I could get a quick consult on some scans, just need her to sign off on something” Monica asked looking at Meredith confused not realising that Amelia could hear her from the scanner.
Just at that moment, Amelia’s scan came up on the screen showing a large tumour on the front part of the brain stunning both doctors looking at it.
“What a tumour” Monica murmured “whose scan is that?” Meredith now looking more scared to say anything and not sure what actually to say to Monica as she knows that Amelia should be the one to say but would she say anything now that it was actually another tumour.
”erm er, I don’t think I should be the one to tell you” Meredith said as confidently as she could as Amelia joined them in the tech room standing at the door.
Monica turned to the door to see a scared Amelia standing at the door already looking towards the scans showing that her tumour was back and Monica realises that the scan was Amelia’s.
Amelia wasn’t able to look at Monica and wasn’t able to get anything out and panicked before hurriedly leaving and running down to her office. Monica stood frozen looking at the empty doorframe before shouting after Amelia “wait Amelia! Amelia!” She then chased after before pausing at the door of Amelia’s office, quietly asking as she knocks on the door “hey beautiful, how are you doing? can I come in?”
Amelia waits on her side of the door for a moment with tears flowing before opening the door to face Monica.
