He's Not Ready (I'm Not Ready)

Chapter 4: 4

Summary:

Hal had heard a scream like this multiple times throughout his career, from Superman, when he found out Batman had died,- even though he was lost to the time stream- he’d even heard it from himself, whenever Barry or Kyle got severely hurt, so no one could blame him for panicking inside, wondering which teammate of his is injured.

Notes:

Hey! It's been a while, I just didn't know where to take this story. Light Angst but Hope you guys enjoy!!!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Everything was going so well. I mean, as well as it could go for superheroes who risk their lives every day.

The fight was going as per usual, Hal himself was up in the air, talking out any backup the extra-terrestrial villains were sending away, which were not that strong but were large in number.

As Hal made sure that no more flying aliens were in the air, he sent out a message through his comms, making sure everything was okay.

This was the 5th major mission the new recruits have been on since joining the League almost 10 months ago.

Just as Hal’s feet touched the ground, a huge blast was heard, the heat rippling the air, making it slightly dance in that funny wave. What wasn’t funny was the gut-hurling scream that made its way through his ears.
Hal’s body tensed up, turning on fight mode again, because he knew that sound, he’s heard that voice making stupid jokes in the watchtower, obnoxiously laughing at every small thing, asking civilians if they were okay after speeding them away from a crime scene.

It was Wally. Except, his voice didn’t sound hurt, it sounded panicked. Like he didn’t know what to do, like he was utterly helpless.

He rushed to the direction where he heard the scream from, going as fast as he could, mentally preparing himself for what he was going to see.

His heart dropped when he saw it- saw him. Nightwing was lying limp in Flamebird’s lap, the latter holding onto his face and trying to get him to get up. Tears were falling onto Nightwing’s sun-kissed skin, skin that was covered in blood from a multitude of places. His mask was torn, half of it on his face covering an eye, while the other half was god-knows-where.

Hal stood frozen in shock, not knowing what to say or do as Flamebird asked, no, begged Nightwing to get up, to just open his eyes as Flamebird repeatedly kissed him while crying.

“Get B. P-please, get Batman now!” Flamebird begged Hal, his voice cracking through his sobs.

Hal didn’t even have time to dwell on the nickname before he quickly switched his comms on. But alas, he didn’t need to as he heard the breakage of air flow, caused by Superman flying at extremely fast speed, probably having rushed here right after he took down the mothership.

Hal turned and saw Batman carried bridal-style in his arms, though not for long. Batman hurriedly jumped out of the Kryptonian’s arms, zooming past him and towards the heroes on the ground.

With zero hesitation, the dark and broody Bat drops down onto his knees, kneeling next to the Blue-Black vigilante laying on the Speedster’s lap. Batman cradles Nightwing’s face- which Hal thought was extremely weird- before turning to the man of tomorrow.

“Get him help…” He asks, his voice more vulnerable than ever before.

Hal only noticed the multitude of heroes surrounding them when the Flash speeds up next to the now-standing-Flamebird, who was staring at Nightwing now in Superman’s arms, his legs shaking and jumping up and down as he shuffled between vibrating with the help of the speed force and standing eerily still,

“Where to?” Superman asks the Bat, trying his hardest to be calm and collected, even though his feet were hovering over the ground.

“N-Not… the cave. The watchtower has better equipment…” Batman stated before Wonder Woman walked up to him, clasping his shoulder in her hand as she offered him an understanding smile.

“Do not worry, my friend. He will make a full recovery like the true warrior he is. You know how they are, they always come back.” She reassures. ‘Huh, weird’ Hal thinks to himself as he searches for Oliver in the crowd.

Batman nods before he walks with Superman and Nightwing to the nearest Zeta, both Flashes following close behind.

Could this day get any worse?
