Alara stops crying almost instantly, her eyes locked on Techno. She blubbers and smiles, eyes still shining with tears.
“Phil,” Techno starts, “it’s looking at me.”
Phil sighs again, but this time it’s pure relief. “Thank the Lady.”
“What, that it’s looking at me? Phil, its eyes are so big.”
Phil closes his eyes for a second. “She, Techno, she.”
Alara giggles and makes grabby hands at Techno. “Phil.” Techno says, and this time it comes out strangled.
Phil can’t do this. He actually can’t. But Cara left in three seconds flat, so it’s definitely too late.

Not much in Phil’s life changes after the ceremony. He sits on his balcony with the birds, chases Tommy in the meadow, takes up gardening with Techno, watches as Wilbur sings a lullaby to make sunflowers grow higher than trees. It’s all very sweet and makes the once deadly and terrifying forest ring with loud peals of laughter.
And then he finds the wanted poster.
