Goku and Vegeta are definitely not the traditional parents. You need only watch their everyday life or ask their wives about that. However, when it comes to their children, they are very much a pair of alpha wolves.

Summary
After the Cell Games, Son House has felt the sting of losing Goku for long enough. Piccolo does what he can for the broken little family and a relationship between himself and Chichi develops in ways that nether of them could have expected.
Eventual Chichi/Piccolo, a lot of friendship and family dynamics, and generally Piccolo just stepping up to support the family. (I've tried not to Goku bash in this, certainly not in a way that's too negative/unpleasant but there will be heavy criticism of his behaviour at select times).

A series focused on Piccolo and how he is impacted by, and impacts other characters in Dragon ball. Mostly set during the series many gaps and time skips. More talking than punching and more feelings than chi blasts.
