He won’t spill All Might’s secret.
Even if All Might deserves it.
Even if he knows that he’s loved in the Quirkless community and they would all believe him without hesitation.
There’s no need. Izuku believes in karma, and based on the way All Might’s going, based on the way he’s clearly too foolish to manage his time appropriately and too foolish to take care of himself and too foolish to retire...
It’s only a matter of time before karma comes around for that man. It was humorous that All Might had the nerve to tell him to be realistic when he wasn’t being realistic about his own limitations. Izuku didn’t think he was going to be the next number one hero. Izuku only wanted to be a hero that put people at ease, and he didn’t think that was something that was too extreme. The only thing All Might was on a path towards was putting himself in a grave.
Fucking idiot.
Izuku would show him realistic.

Summary
They get back to school just a little after sunrise, sleepless and buzzing, with grass and dead leaves in their hair. Their classmates glance curiously between them but don’t ask. Katsuki and Izuku have always been a unit unto themselves, two halves of an inexplicable relationship that started way before UA and will last way after they leave. Nobody questions it. Nobody cares, probably, but Izuku indulges the thought that maybe he and his Kacchan are just a constant, an unremarkable part of the furniture that surprises nobody because the way they are is just right.
They move in together, after a while. Katsuki joins Best Jeanist and Izuku trains under Gran Torino. They still take comfort in each other every day, curl up in bed and kiss and talk about how life is going. Their live are tumultuous, after all, what with villains and training and rescuing people every week. It’s nice to have something certain. At the end of a day filled with violence and adrenaline, Izuku knows he can come home to someone concrete.
It’s perfect. Being a hero is scary and grueling and uncertain, but this part is just right.
And then, one day, a child dies in Izuku’s arms.

"What if we're not late bloomers?" Deku had asked him once when they were very young. “What if we don’t get our quirks? What if our quirks never come for our whole lives?”
Katsuki hadn't been able to answer, then. All he'd known was that they'd be able to do anything together, even if the hero business tried to spit them out just because they were missing bits and pieces. That was until Deku'd told him the truth, anyway. That he'd been hiding a quirk for ten years and Katsuki had just been stupid and trusting.
He doesn't get into UA. Deku leaves him behind and lives the dream alone. Katsuki picks up modelling and turns out to be surprisingly good at it, and after a while he thinks maybe he can make peace with never becoming a hero. This ain't a bad life, after all. There are stalkers and endless reporters but maybe he can make this work.
For all of six years, anyway. Then he figures out his new neighbour has green eyes and cute freckles. And then, Katsuki thinks, maybe god hates him.

Izuku's image of heroes is shattered. He's disillusioned. But instead of getting bitter, he's just...tired.
He'd just like to stop thinking about it. Maybe it's better, to lock himself away where he is safe from the biting teeth of the outside world.There's a strange boy he keeps meeting on rooftops.
Izuku thinks that they should really stop meeting like this.
(Even after all this, Izuku handles people kindly, careful hands cradling their potential between his palms. His touch is soft where no one else's is.)

Izuku’s shoulders dropped slightly.
“I asked them if someone without a quirk could become a hero.”
Stendhal-san snorted. Izuku’s shoulders nearly covered his ears. He knew, he heard it from All Might already, he didn’t need to have Stendhal-san repeat it, too-
“Obviously,” Stendhal-san said, leaning back on his arms. “Quirks are merely tools; plenty of heroes have perfect quirks and not an ounce of heroism in their blood. You’re already more of a hero than numbers 2 through 10, combined.”
Izuku could feel the tears slipping down his cheeks, sobbing at the words he had been yearning to hear for so long.
“Did they- did they not say that?” Stendhal-san asked, startled by Izuku’s reaction.
