His head turned back up, staring at the winding steps.
“You don’t want to go up there.” It was a statement.
He shook his head. “Not really, no. Well, I mean, I could, but it’s a lot of stairs, and I don’t…” His throat bobbed and he let out a forced laugh. “No one ever visited me up there. That’s one of the reasons I became such good friends with the rats. They were the only ones who were ever there.”

After all the festivities have ended and the family has gone to bed, Mirabel Madrigal finds Tío Bruno sitting at the bottom of the stairs in his tower, staring up toward the top as if there was nothing he wanted to do less than climb them.
