"The songs had changed with time, of course, but there was no feeling in the world that could compare to the rush of a perfectly completed chord, the swell of strings under his voice, or the way a conductor’s baton could pull sound from him that he had never heard before in his long life. It was like sorcery, or sex, an intoxicating sensation that he could never quite stop chasing. If a bowl full of pins in his hair was what it took to walk the boards every evening in such utter bliss, he would pay it a thousand times over.
A creak of boards behind him froze him in place, long fingers tangled in their struggle with the very last pin. The theatre should be long since empty, and he felt his pulse quicken in alarm until a familiar scent rolled over him, turning his bones to water and his flesh to fire. He had never been quite able to place it, no matter how many times he tasted it, an intriguing mix of lavender and camphor that reminded him of the bedroom and the grave in equal measure. "
