Summary
The paintress was so close, Sciel could feel each exhale blow softly against her face. Clea smelled like a combination of newly mixed paint and freshly bloomed flowers.
The rules of the game had shifted.
When Clea leaned in, ever so slightly, Sciel thought she might kiss her. She hoped she would. Alas, her lips ghosted against the edge of Sciel's ear instead, the words murmured in a throaty whisper:
"Don't start something you don't have the strength to finish.”
The pressure eased as Clea released her, leaving Sciel gasping alone against the wall, asking herself, what the fuck just happened?
When Renoir Dessendre begs his eldest daughter to save his youngest, neither of them expect a certain former teacher-turned-Expeditioner to tumble out instead.
Now trapped in the middle of a Paris torn by war and a family torn by grief, Sciel learns to navigate the complicated politics of the Dessendre family while discovering what it means to exist in this strange new world.
It doesn't help that Clea, Maelle's dangerously attractive sister, can't stand the sight of her, distrust written in every line of her watchful face.

Summary
The times she met the woman were few and far between, with her appearing suddenly one day and taking her in like a storm, before disappearing sometimes for months, before returning without many words, holding her in her arms, worshiping her like she was the goddess of this world and not the figure that loomed on the horizon, without never asking anything in return, if not Emma’s presence and warmth.
She barely knew anything about Clea, and if she were to admit, she didn’t really try to pry for her secrets. She always had this faraway look in her eyes whenever Emma wasn’t being object of her attention, ever present.
Clea herself had taken her by surprise last time.
“When the Paintress will fall, then, I will tell you everything.”
The way she had spoken was almost certain that the being that plagued this world for almost a century would be defeated. Like she knew something no one else did.

Summary
Princess Emma of Lumiere is expected to marry for the sake of her kingdom, strengthening alliances with powerful neighboring courts. But her brother, King Gustave, wishes happiness in marriage for her. Instead of arranging her husband-to-be, he allows Emma to design a series of trials so she may choose her own partner from among the visiting princes and delegates.
Yet as nobles compete for her hand, it is not a prince who captures Emma’s heart, but a jester. Someone entirely outside the role she is meant to accept.
As the trials unfold, Emma must decide whether to follow duty as the kingdom expects, or risk everything to choose love on her own terms.
