This work was pure genius. I love how everything developed to differently with only one small detail changed. And it was so very, very believable - I also liked the idea that the helmet was designed by material from Piotr's skin - well, not like like, obviously, but this is now my official head canon. I was always kind of sceptical where they pulled the material from. A mutant with skin resistant to telepathy makes much more sense. And all the characters had so much personality, it made the story all the more fun to read! One thing I (kind of) regret is that we didn't get to see what choice Charles would have made with the soldier. I really can't guess what he would have chosen (or if he'd have found a third option), it really was a double bind. I'd also give a lot to see how the kids, Erik and Moira team up and start working together back at the base.
...Anyway, I really think the future will be a better thing from there on, because everyone in the story still learned what they had to in order to "grow up", but they did it without all the heart break, the declaration of war on mankind and the loss of bodily function.
So, anyway - I loved the story and the amazing art of course. I will now go and reread the entire thing.
Thank you so much! I knew from the start that with a fic set in Russia, I wanted to include Piotr -- it's definitely not comics!canon that he's at all resistant to telepathy, but the potential connection with the helmet was too good to resist. And I have buckets of backstory in my head about how Moira and Armando wound up training the kids together at the mansion, my biggest regret is that by keeping the POV tight on Charles, there was no way to work any of it into the fic. :/
