Summary
“Boss, Peter Parker’s heart has stopped.”
Tony spits out his coffee. “What? Friday? Repeat?”
She’s still just as deadpan as before. “Peter Parker’s heart has stopped, as reported by his in-suit AI, Karen.”
“What the fuck?” Tony chokes, stumbling out of his seat. The chair topples over behind him, hitting the floor with a loud crack, and Tony tries to catch his breath. “Like, you’re talking directly to Karen or you’re reading diagnostics from Karen?” His mouth is dry and his hands are shaking, and he’s already heading for the door.
“Diagnostics,” Friday says. “Karen is unresponsive.”
Tony activates his earpiece and nearly trips over his own feet. “Fri, call him, push through a call to Peter, just, just—push it through, don’t wait for him to answer.”

Summary
“Congratulations,” he says. “Today marks the first day in history that you weren’t a complete dumbass.”
“Thank you, thank you very much,” Hammer says, bending over in a deep bow, hands whipping with a flourish. “I thought about every variable, every avenue, now we just need Miss Pepper Wifey to answer my calls and—”
Tony experiences a flash of anger at that, and then a high pitched tone starts going off in his ears, and now he feels like a dumbass.
Peter. Was with Pepper.
Peter.
Like a shining light in the darkness and someone Hammer has clearly not paid attention to despite all his fucking planning, because he would have mentioned it amongst all the other bragging. Spider-Man isn’t an official Avenger yet to the world, just among the group. And Peter would never think Tony is slacking. Because Peter just doesn’t think that way.

Summary
It’s after midnight, and yeah, he’s gotten calls from Peter at all hours of the night, but usually, it’s when he’s in trouble.
Tony answers fast. “Hey buddy,” he says. “You okay?”
Peter’s breath is coming fast, and he doesn’t say anything for a moment.
Tony sits up straighter, eyes intent. “Peter, what’s going on?” he asks. “Talk to me.”
“I—I, I—I made a bad decision. I didn’t know. I didn’t—I didn’t know. Help me.”
Tony nearly leaps to his feet. Help me. Not I need help. Just help me. “Where are you?” he asks. “What happened? Who did this, what’s going on?”

Summary
“Tony, it’s okay—”
Both guys are wearing masks, one red and one black, and they loom over them.
“No, it’s not,” Tony hisses, and he throws his arm out across Peter’s chest, like that’s gonna fucking do something. He grits his teeth. “If you’re gonna hurt one of us, hurt me! Say you beat the shit out of Iron Man, that’ll do something for your reputation—”
Black mask laughs. “Spider-Man’s more our speed—”
“Beating up on a goddamn child, that’s cute, that’s real cute.” He doesn’t say he could kill you if you didn’t restrain him because he doesn’t want to give them any ideas about how strong Peter is. He has visions of experiments and torture and he doesn’t even know what this is, but he needs it done, now.
Tony tries to keep shielding him, but it doesn’t take much for them to reach around him and grab Peter up. Peter barely fights, just lets himself get dragged away.

Summary
“Who is that?” Tony asks, pointing, trying to ignore the ringing in his ears.
“Uh, I don’t know her name,” Peter says. He’s bouncing a beautiful baby girl on his knee, arms wrapped protectively around her. She can’t be any more than a year old. “I was out, doing my thing, you know, when I found her—”
“Stop,” Tony says. He holds up his hands and sits down in the booth across from him. The baby looks serene and happy, in her little pink outfit, and she pats her hands on the table, leaning forward. Tony just keeps staring. “Stop.”
“I stopped.”
“How do you just—how do you just find a baby?” Tony asks, incredulous. “I don’t understand.”

Summary
“I’m sorry, Pete,” Tony whispers. “We should have checked you for something like this when we were resetting your arm and checking on the concussion. Goddamnit. We didn’t think.”
“He poisoned us both?” Peter asks, trying to open one eye to look at him.
“Yeah,” Tony says, brushing Peter’s hair back from his forehead. “He’s dying. He got the brunt of it, a nice fucking cocktail of bullshit, including mercury and a bunch of other toxic shit—”
“Am I dying?” Peter whispers, voice breaking.

Summary
Tony doesn’t sleep, because he can’t, because too many things are plaguing him, most of all where Peter is and what he’s doing. Tony has a good view of the hallway through the windows to his room, and he stares and stares until his eyes cross, until he hallucinates, until he knows he’s going insane.
He sees Peter sneaking into the med bay at about four in the morning.
The kid’s mask is off and he’s got two short, harsh slashes across his cheek, and he’s bleeding from a slice across his neck. His suit is ripped in a few places and he’s holding onto his middle, and Tony can see his hands are shaking.
It’s like something splinters in Tony’s already broken brain, like his world narrows and there are hazy edges, both weakness and strength entwining in his veins when he sees Peter struggle up onto one of the beds in the main atrium, starting to tend his wounds without calling anybody to help.
