Summary
She can't stop to look at it too closely, to look at this feeling with any real consideration, because the results would be devastating. Because she would have to admit that what she feels for Jesse is strong and real and valid and good--
--but it's not this.

“You’re in trouble,” Dina says in a sing song taunt, “T-R-O-B-L...wait...T-R-U-L...fuck.”

Summary
She doesn't want to talk about it, that winter on the road with Joel. She can’t stomach the idea of Dina seeing her that way, seeing her as a scared, pitiful kid, hungry and crying on the ground from fear and frustration. The thought that Dina might pity her, even for a second, is too much. No fucking way.

Summary
Dina fixes her with a soft, surprised expression; there in the flickering light from the bonfire, it’s enough to make Ellie feel the kind of happy she wasn’t sure she was even capable of feeling. A feeling so big, so good, that she hadn’t been sure it was possible for her to feel it. She had wondered, in the past, if maybe she just wasn’t wired for feeling these kinds of things--deep and pure and good. She’d thought maybe she was just destined for feeling lukewarm, mediocre at best.
But Dina proved her wrong, because nothing she felt about Dina was lukewarm or mediocre.
