"You sound surprised," Luke said with a smile. It wasn't a grin, it wasn't even full of excitement and passion, but it reached his eyes lighting up his whole face. Julie almost felt the need to smile too.
"Well yeah, I haven't met a lot of Shadowhunters who have... you know, hobbies."

Julie and Flynn go on their travel year to the Los Angeles Institute hoping it will turn out great. Or in Julie's case, at least remotely good. In her defense she didn't expect to become a member of Luke Blackthorn's non-existent band. Then again she didn't expect her life to be threatened from her first day there either.

He'd been lying on his bed, quietly staring at the ceiling, waiting for the shouting to stop. And it did for a while, until it started again a few minutes later and Reggie had suddenly decided that he was going to the Institute. It wasn't even that he was tired and wanted to sleep, despite it being way past midnight, but the Institute would at least be quiet.
Which was funny really if you thought about it because the LA Institute was the least quiet place he knew.

The first month had been weird. By the second he was used to everything, it wasn't like he didn't spend most of his time in the Institute anyway. After that, it was just life. He hadn't mended his relationship with his parents, but he'd said all he had to say. The ball was on their court if they wanted to do something about it. And then Flynn and Julie had announced that they were coming back, permanently and that was probably the highlight of Carrie's year because more people in her life just stayed. And she was happy. And her dad said she sounded happier. And she would shove all her insecurities in the back whenever they tried to resurface and remind her that last time things were good too until they weren’t, because this was not like last time. Reggie chuckled as he took a dagger out of his boot. "It's more of a habit if it helps," he said as he carried on to take out several knives.
"You too," Willie told Alex. "You've turned the apartment into an armory, I know you didn't just come over with a knife." Alex sighed and started taking out more knives too.
"Eight knives? How do you fit eight knives on you?" Kayla asked looking at Reggie with wide eyes.
"It's all about the clothes," Reggie said, making casual conversation. "You know, Flynn walks around with at least five knives on her at all times."
"That... does not make me feel better," Kayla said with a sigh.

"Oh so it wasn’t the fact that he took care of the Caleb situation for us," Leah said, coming back and putting her tray on the bar, "it was the punch that really did it for you."
"It was a good moment, what can I say," he said.

Carrie had been awake for a while now, staring at the ceiling, tapping her fingers on top of the mattress. Last night had been a disaster and she didn’t even know how it’d gone so bad so fast. They had to do something before more people started showing up dead under much too mysterious circumstances.
The question still remained though, what was causing these deaths? Someone was obviously trying to create a rift between the two largest Downworld groups in LA and it was only a matter of time before tensions rose and there was no going back. Carrie knew that neither Dante nor Willie wanted this to escalate, they didn’t want to put their people in danger and they didn’t want to hurt anyone. But people were already in danger and they were already getting hurt and Carrie hadn't seen Willie yesterday, but she could only imagine he wasn’t taking it well.

Reggie's leg was bouncing under the table, while he focused on the plate in front of him, stabbing things with his fork without saying anything. He smiled politely like he was supposed to do and waited until the praise was over. He wasn’t going to be the one to ruin his family's reputation.
"Not that easy to find nowadays," Elena continued. "The stress of the job gets to a lot of Shadowhunters after so many years and the fact that they haven’t let it affect them... I mean I’m sure this is not news to you, we’ve all heard about the accomplishments of the LA Institute, it’s a true testament to how they raised you-"
"Okay, we get it, they’re great!" Reggie said as he let his fork clatter loudly on his plate. Elena looked at him surprised at the sudden interruption and Reggie was pretty sure a lot of heads had turned their direction. Great.
"I'm sorry," he said as he got up and dashed out of the room.
He'd screwed up. Of course he'd screwed up, why couldn’t he just stay silent for a few minutes? Smile and agree, it wasn’t like his parents had actually come over and started gushing about how perfect they were. By the Angel, he should be able to keep it together after so long.

"Are you okay?" Willie asked again, looking him over.
"I'm fine, everything's fine," he said, waving his hand in dismissal as he walked further inside and sat on the couch.
Willie looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "Are you sick?"
"What? No, I’m a Shadowhunter!" Alex looked at him as if personally offended by the question.
"You can be both, you know," Willie said with a small smile. No, this was serious, he shouldn’t smile. Even if Alex was kinda cute.

"We can’t get out there, they’re gonna kill us all," Carrie said.
"We can’t stay in here, we need something more than runes!" Alex turned to them just as exasperated.
"What we need is the rest of the Institute," Flynn said, walking closer to Julie who was trying to make sure Luke still had a pulse.
"They should be on their way, Luke made the call," Reggie said.
"We don’t know how long-" Julie started to say when her head snapped back to Luke. Her fingers were against the side of his neck, right above his pulse point. Only she couldn’t feel anything anymore. She looked at his chest, unmoving. "He’s not breathing," she choked out.
"Shit," Flynn said as she came up on his other side right next to Alex who threw the overly bloodied towel on the floor and grabbed the other one, applying the same pressure.
