Summary
If you need anything, you call me. That’s what Aizawa had said when he’d given him his number. Hitoshi wasn’t really sure what he meant by that. He probably didn’t mean this.
What would he even say?
He wasn’t sure, but he’d already pressed the Call button.
It rang three times. Aizawa was probably on patrol anyway, or asleep. Either way, he wouldn’t answer his phone.
The ringing stopped.
“Shinsou?” Aizawa’s voice was low, heavy with the dregs of sleep. “What is it?”
“I’m sorry. You were asleep.” Hitoshi could have kicked himself. Of course Aizawa was asleep: it was one in the morning, what was he thinking—
“It’s okay,” Aizawa said, interrupting Hitoshi’s rapidly spiralling thoughts. “I wasn’t really. I drifted off grading papers.” There was a noise on the other end of the line, like Aizawa was now in motion.
“What’s going on?” Aizawa still sounded tired, but there was an alertness to his voice that hadn’t been there before.
“Uh.” Shit. What was Hitoshi supposed to say to that? “Nothing.”
Definitely not that.
Or, Hitoshi is in a bad situation. Aizawa is going to help, whether Hitoshi wants him to or not.

Summary
“Are you gonna tell us now?”
Hitoshi chewed his bite slowly, hoping that somehow between his bite and his swallow, Aiko would forget she’d asked anything at all. But Hitoshi had never had that kind of luck, so finally, he swallowed and nodded. “Yeah.”
He could feel his sister's eyes on him, bright and focused. Haru was looking at him too. He avoided their gazes and squeezed Mei a little tighter in his lap.
“There’s a new home,” he began, and he didn’t need to look to know that both Haru and Aiko had gone very, very still. “Two moms. My teachers know them. It’s…” He took a deep breath. “It’s close to here. Only ten minutes away on the train.”
Aiko caught what he wasn’t saying. Of course she did; she was too smart for her own good. Hitoshi half-wished she wouldn’t ask the question, but he didn’t know how to break it to the kids that they were going without him if she didn’t just ask.
Aiko was unblinking. “Why does that matter?”
Hitoshi hesitated. “Because I’m not going with you.”
Or, the sun still comes up the next morning. Things have changed. Hitoshi isn't sure how to deal with those facts.

Summary
For every problem that had been solved by Aizawa removing Hitoshi from his foster home, it seemed ten new ones had cropped up. Only this time, they were all internal; something wrong with Hitoshi, rather than the situation. That was worse, Hitoshi decided. It guaranteed that accusing fingers would find him eventually and this time, they’d be right.
Aizawa and Hizashi were doing their best— though he couldn’t understand why. It was him who was failing.
He felt bad. They were doing so much for him— so much he didn’t deserve— and how did he repay them? By remaining as much of a problem as he’d ever been?
He owed them and he knew it. If he couldn’t repay them by becoming better, then he would have to find another way. And he was pretty sure he already had.

Summary
Hitoshi wasn’t stupid. Like the drop of the other shoe, he’d known all along this was coming.
It was a Thursday evening— over two weeks since the upheaval of Hitoshi’s life— that Aizawa came home with the news.
“They found your previous foster parents. They’ve been arrested. The investigation’s officially underway now.”
Hitoshi didn’t know why he froze. By all rights, the news should have made him feel better. Instead, dread settled like a stone in his stomach.
Aizawa’s voice was gentle— too gentle. “They’re going to need you to give a detailed statement down at the station.”
The investigation into Hitoshi's previous foster home is just beginning and Hitoshi is falling apart.
