Summary
Thinking of Peggy and Angie automatically shifts Steve’s thoughts to Bucky, because of course it does. In a perfect world, Bucky would be by his side all the time, at the White House, during national security meetings, at fancy donor events, giving him advice, putting his hand on Steve’s knee or at the small of his back for support, whispering provocative shit in his ear at inappropriate times.
Bucky.
Steve closes his eyes for a second or two and buries the ache in his gut, but he’s still deep in his reverie and has just reached the bar for that drink when…
“Mr. President!”

Summary
As Fury disappears around the corner toward his own office on the other side of the West Wing, Steve heads into the Oval Office. The blast of air conditioning is a shock, but a welcome one.
He’s relieved at the coolness, but is also keenly aware of a sharp feeling of untethered loneliness. Not for the first time this month — not even for the first time this week — he feels desperately alone and isolated. Even amongst his wonderful staff and with a lovely, adoring wife.
Images of Bucky, pacing down Columbia Street in Brooklyn, sitting commandingly astride Steve’s hips and riding his dick, lying in bed with him and talking, that sweet smile flashing across his face like a sunrise, race through Steve’s head all at once and a sharp pain lances through his chest.
Suddenly the only thing Steve wants in the world is to get away with the love of his life, to hide in a remote paradise as far away from his duties and colleagues as possible and spend his days worshipping Bucky the way he deserves.
“Mr. President?” Okoye’s voice is concerned but cautious, as if she’s nervous about overstepping her remit.
“I’m OK, Okoye. Really.”

Summary
Bucky puts his arms around Steve, pulling him close, strong hands stroking over his back and hair.
“You need to stay here,” he insists in Steve’s ear. Pulling back, he looks Steve straight in the face. “Stevie, I love you more than anyone in the world, and I’ll do anything to keep you safe. And alive. OK?”
Looking into Bucky’s face, Steve feels his insides seething with a bewildering range of emotions. He wants to go back to the White House and do the job he was elected to do. He wants to reassure the American people that he’s OK. He wants to keep his friends and loved ones safe. He wants to hunt down his enemies, one by one, and make them pay.
He wants to run off with the love of his life to a private island in the Caribbean and never come back.

Summary
“I won’t have that.” At the idea of Bucky and his friends being at risk, Steve feels his own stubbornness rising. “You all shouldn’t be in danger because of me.”
“With all due respect, Mr. President,” Okoye says softly. “I signed an oath to protect you no matter what, and Nat feels the same. And I’m guessing Barnes does too, given…everything.”
Sliding his eyes sideways, Steve sees two pink spots surface above Bucky’s cheekbones for a moment before disappearing.
“A’course I do.” Bucky’s voice wavers only a little, but Steve knows just how much emotion lies behind those words. “Only I’m protecting my best friend, president or no president.”

Summary
Leaning down carefully, he runs his hands in the cool water and splashes some on his face. He lets it drip down his cheeks, through his beard — the beard he didn’t have ten days ago. Ten days ago? That trip to Phoenix feels like a lifetime away. He waits for another minute before wiping off the rest with the hem of his t-shirt.
Wandering back to the cars, Steve feels better. It’s like the water has wiped away all the doubt and fear he felt last night.
He’s ready for today, whatever happens.

Summary
The doorknob on the entrance from the hall is turning, and Steve knows he’s out of time.
“I know this all sounds unlikely and scary,” he says. “But I have faith in you and I have faith that together we can fight against fear and hate and embrace the best in this country, and in ourselves.”
The door is opening. Steve puts his hand on his heart in a completely spontaneous gesture. “And that fight begins right now,” he asserts, as sincerely as he can. “The price of freedom is high, it always has been. But it’s a price I’m willing to pay. I hope you are too. God bless you all, and God bless the United States and may we keep believing in its highest ideals.”
A slow clap starts from the doorway as Pierce walks into the room.
“What a great speech, Rogers,” he says sarcastically. “Did you memorize it beforehand, or is that the kind of weak kumbaya nonsense you jerk off to every night?”

Summary
“Hey, Buck,” Steve starts. They’re lying on Steve’s bed in the Presidential Suite a few minutes after their usual late-evening session.
“Yeah, Stevie,” mutters his boyfriend, running his flesh fingers up and down Steve’s arm to bring up the goosebumps.
Steve shivers a little, but not because he’s cold; it’s a chilly mid-December night in DC and although they keep the White House rooms cooler to save energy, especially at night, Steve’s always run warm and now he’s running even warmer. Yeah, sure, he was shivering from cold after his rescue from the facility in western Pennsylvania, but that was a reaction to the serum. Once he was stabilized and the serum was flushed from his system, things went back to normal.
OK, they didn’t really go back to normal. Which is kind of what he wants to talk to Bucky about right now.

Summary
Leaning forward, Okoye lays her hand over his. “There is a tough time ahead, and you will have to make decisions about what is important to you. And you will need to be strong for your wife, to support her and take care of her and love her.”
“But,” she goes on, “no one doubts your capacity for strength. Emotional and mental strength, not just those muscles.” Her eyes twinkle as they rove over Steve’s biceps, huge under the custom tailoring of his suit jacket.
She sighs a little and squeezes his fist before pulling away. “And remember that you’re not alone in this, Steve. You never have been. You also have people who support you and take care of you. And love you.”

Summary
“That was a lovely speech, Sir,” Okoye says when they’re swaying amongst the crowd on the dance floor.
“Thanks, Okoye, but it’s ‘Steve’ tonight. You’re off-duty,” Steve points out. She shakes her head. “Old habits, and all that,” she chuckles.
“Steve, can I ask you a personal question,” she says a minute later, her voice low and hesitant.
“Of course.”
“Do you…do you ever wish you…” Okoye stops for a moment, to Steve’s surprise. She’s not usually this awkward. “Do you ever wish you could dance in public with…him.”
A rush of emotion washes through Steve’s midsection.

Summary
Now that he’s passed the mantle of the presidency to someone else, especially a beloved friend and colleague, Steve feels a weight lifted from his shoulders. It’s almost a physical sensation — his spine feels longer and the ever-present tension in his chest seems to drain away.
Steve takes a deep breath and lets it out on an audible exhale. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Okoye, standing among the Secret Service cohort at the end of Former President Row and smiling at him.
“It’s better now, isn’t it,” murmurs Obama in the seat next to Steve. “You feel the relief.”
Steve nods, looks intently at the ground to hold back the tears that are welling up in his eyes.
“Yeah,” he sighs out, and then again. “Yeah, it really is.”

Summary
“Steve,” Peggy interrupts, gentle but firm. “Pardon my French, but fuck your schedule. Fuck it all the way off into the sun.”
This forces a semi-shocked snort out of Steve’s throat. His ex only ever swears when she’s furious. Or drunk.
“Oh my god, Peggy,” he blurts out with an uncomfortable laugh.
“I fucking mean it.” She clutches his hands close to her chest, breathing heavily. “I know you’re very big on duty and service and all that bullshit, but you need to get your fucking priorities straight, and right the fuck now.”
