Summary
“How… how are you doing?” Mandi asks, and then, before Chrissy can answer, “You look good.” It comes out fast, like she wants to make sure she gets it out. She’s clutching the strap of her purse, her nails painted the same pale blue as the bow in her hair.
If she’s making fun of her, Chrissy can’t tell, and it wouldn’t matter anyway.
. . .
An unexpected run-in with one of the Hawkins High cheerleaders at Family Video reminds Chrissy of how much is different now between her and the girls she used to spend all her time with, and how much was never the same to begin with.

Summary
She’s standing in the road just barely illuminated by the headlights, wrongangle arm twisted behind her back. Jaw hanging loose.
Nothing that will ever see heaven.
. . .
Chrissy remembers, and remembers, and remembers, then does what she does best: disappear with Eddie Munson until she forgets she's dead.

Summary
He smells like sweat.
The back of his shirt is damp, and he smells like sweat and Old Spice and the Hideout, stale beer and cigarette smoke.
Two weeks before prom, hours past when she would have been holding her breath through her final fitting in another life, another body flinching and praying the dress fits, falls properly, praying the next two weeks won’t be agony -- Chrissy hides her face against Eddie Munson’s back in the parking lot of a dive bar, hugging tight around his middle, pressing close like she can make them just one thing if she tries hard enough.
. . .
Eddie’s friendship is the warmest thing Chrissy has ever known. It’s so much more than she ever thought she would have, but for the first time in her life she wants more, and it hurts.
Or, Chrissy, the body, and Eddie.

Summary
Vanilla soft serve melts to nothing on Chrissy’s tongue, strawberry syrup coating every bit of her mouth. Her lips feel sticky with sugar no matter how much she licks at them.
The breeze blows in warm, pushing her hair into her face. She reaches for it before it can stick to her mouth, her other hand holding her ice cream out of the way.
Sudden warmth at her temple has her going so still. Eddie gathers up her hair, tucking it back for her. Rough fingertips catch her ear, and her breath sticks in her throat.
“Thank you,” she says, soft. “I should’ve tied it up.”
“Nah, I think this town’s seen enough tragedy already.”
. . .
Chrissy, Eddie, and what grows in summertime.
