Part 1 of The Most Dangerous Thing (Is To Love), or the wholesome Maygrove ship you didn't know you needed.
A series of one-shots following the development of a relationship between Billy and Max - starting from their first meeting in California and into Hawkins years - that runs the gamut from antagonistic to platonic to extremely smutty and evolves into more of a narrative as it progresses. This is a different take on Max and Billy than in Separate Ways, but is again more of an unconventional love story vs. any sort of pseudo-sibling kink. Max is only 1 year younger than Billy (and the Hawkins boys are correspondingly older); changes to canonical events once they get to Hawkins (Chapter 33). Significant creative license taken with both characters' backstories; they meet in their teen years, so they still feel very much like strangers thrown together. This story fills in the gaps between events of Season 2 (November 1984) and events of Season 3 (June 1985) with original storytelling and picks up with Season 3 events (reimagined). Max and Billy (Max is aged up; there's only a 1 year age difference) are the primary romantic pairing, though others are mentioned (see tags). Read Cologne and Cigarettes for the Max and Billy backstory (unconventional love story vs. pseudo-sibling kink for a variety of reasons, so if you're on the fence, give it a try!) This story picks up the narrative after the end of Season 3 (summer 1985) and fills in the blanks between Season 3 and Season 4 (March 1986) with some significant changes to canon because Billy is alive & well. (Read Part I: Cologne and Cigarettes and Part II: Whiskey and Smoke for all the backstory. They're fun, I promise.) Season 4 events involve Vecna but are creatively reimagined. This sequel is basically nothing but collected one-shots with a sort-of-storyline: primarily fluff and smut as Maygrove and Hellcheer live out their happily ever afters (mostly in California). Other supporting characters will still appear. Slower updates than in previous installments.
