It was useless. Abby raised it higher, which only caused Ellie to weep louder. With millions of regrets racing through her mind. Joel closed his eyes in anticipation.
"Please! He's my dad. Please, don't...don't take him from me. Please." Not by blood, but Joel was her family. At that moment, she didn't care how angry she was at him, how she tried so hard to act like she didn't need him anymore. "Joel, please get up!"
Or, What if Joel hadn't died? What if Abby spared his life? Giving Ellie and Joel a proper chance to fix their broken bond.

He turned over onto his back, eyebrows stitched close together in confusion. "What?"
Ellie nodded. "Yeah, it runs in your jeans."
He'd only looked at her for a second, which got a giggle out of Ellie. Joel huffed, almost amused as he settled his head against his jacket. For a minute she thought he was just going to ignore her.
Then she heard it. It had been the smallest excuse of a chuckle she had ever heard, but she sure did hear it.
She made Joel laugh. That...wasn't something she was aware she'd been trying to do until it happened.

She cried into his chest. Fat tears trailed down her cheeks. "Y-...you're not-...please don't-..." She cut herself off with a loud sob. "We s-stick together."
He nodded, swallowing the lump in his throat. He hated seeing her this upset. It was his fault, these issues weren't present until he tried to ditch her. He'd apologized a million times for that whole argument and he was ready to apologize for a million more.
"Of course, Ellie." He looked down at her, wiping away her tears only for them to be replaced by more moments later. "We stick together."
Or, post TLOU 1, moments of Ellie and Joel's time in Jackson with my own fix-it twists because they both deserve nothing but happiness.

Ellie thought she knew pain. She thought she'd felt all the pain in the world. That was until she watched her entire world's head pulverize into the floor of that cabin. When all that was left of the man she knew so well was a bloody, nearly unrecognizable corpse
She wished she died with him, conceivably in some ways, she had. Ellie Williams died right alongside Joel Miller, all that was left was an empty vessel full of sadness, anger, and hate.
Or, Ellie struggles a lot after Joel's death. Inspired by the fact that every time she draws him, she can't remember what his eyes look like. I saw that and it struck up a bunch of feels.
