Summary
It was no secret to anyone within the Mentor's Room that Brutus and Enobaria from District 2 were undeniably fond of the youngest Victor, District 4's Finnick Odair.
Nobody was quite sure where the fondness had started exactly. They all knew in the 66th, between the chaos of the tribute from 9, the number of tributes freezing to death, and the Victory of Gloss Evermore of District 1, Enobaria and Brutus had taken Finnick in as though he were another member of the pack.
The boy had won at 14 years old, and had come to mentor the following year. To all the Victors, he'd truly been just a baby, a much younger than most of the other Districts would typically send first time, even if he did go with the incredibly experienced Mags.
Brutus and Enobaria took him under their wing with ease. At the end of the games that year, while they all waited for the new Victor to be crowned, the two mentors from 2 had taken Finnick to the training facility and lightly sparred with him.
It became something of a tradition for them, one maintained with ease up to the 74th.

Summary
There was a large Capitol gathering during the spring leading up to the 74th Annual Hunger Games, thrown by none other than the President of Panem himself, to congratulate some wealthy sponsor family or another for the graduation of their granddaughter or something along those lines. To be honest, none of the Victors had noted exactly why the party was being thrown, just that they were stuck attending by order of the President, and none of them were too keen to disobey Coriolanus Snow.
(The mentors are invited to a party during the off season of the games, allowing them to see one another outside of the tense environment of the Mentor's Room. They use the party as a way to steal some little moments where they can be with their friends without watching as their tributes slaughter each other.)

Summary
Haymitch never thought he'd have to have this conversation. Realistically, he'd known from the minute his miracle Victors had won and the Victory tour ended, kind of without major issues, that the quell would hurt. That his kids would be forced to mentor, and eventually he'd have to tell them about the sponsors and the pain of being a Victor.
He'd never had a kid to do that for, no kid to bring with him, no kid to try in vain to protect, no kid to teach how to protect oneself from the Capitol monsters. He'd begun to think he never would get a kid out of the games at all.
Now he had two, and he had to watch both. He had to tell them how the games was only the beginning. How they may have survived the Hunger Games but all that meant was that they had to survive the Capitol and it's demands, year in and year out, until they were able to get another Victor out, until they could get that new Victor to take their place.

Summary
Being a Victor in Panem is considered the only positive outcome of entering the Hunger Games. However, the Victors would all rather their demises in their games. Being a Victor is a slower death sentence than being a tribute. Especially when there was a Capitol Party.
A large Capitol party was the opposite of what Victors wanted. For the "desirable" Victors, it was a larger hell than their normal one was. For the less "desirable" Victors, it was a major hell compared to the "small" one.

Summary
Effie Trinket knew that the districts didn't often do the things the Capitol did. In fact, the districts hardly ever did the things the Capitol did. But it honestly truly broke her heart to learn that the districts didn't celebrate Christmas.
Christmas was by far her favorite Capitol holiday. And while she knew that the districts hardly did holidays at all, it still made her sad to hear that they didn't have Christmas, in any of the districts. Not because it set them apart from the Capitol, and certainly not because it made them primitive or unworthy. But because it was just another stolen joy that the Capitol, that Effie's people, took away from them.

Summary
Johanna Mason did not have many friends, not as far as she knew. Sure, she had Blight, her new father figure and yes, she had Finnick and Annie. But she wasn’t close with the other mentors. Not really. Or at least she didn’t think she was, until they all began to call her Jo. What started that?

Summary
"Well, well." A voice from behind them all says, their presence filling the room with the sickening scent of roses. "To what do I owe the pleasure of so many Victors all here at once after the Games have ended for the day. It's not time for the post-Game Ceremony yet."
Brutus recognizes the voice, and he fights to keep a sneer from his face as he finally looks away from the blood.
"President Snow." Beetee says slowly, respectful passing, albeit with a thinly veiled hint of bitterness.
"Looking for my songbird?" Snow questions.
Argyle's expression twitches. "Your songbird...sir?"
"Chara Thistle Star." Snow clarifies, smiling eerily. "My songbird... A true shame, her wings had to be...clipped. She was such a nice little songbird. A real pity."
Snow walks forward, examining the blood splatter with that same smile. "What a lovely shade of red her blood was."
