Summary
"Out of it, kind of," Buck admitted. "They must have me on the good stuff. There's still-" His gaze finally flicked to his leg as he got ready to mention the pain that he could feel, even if only distantly. But the words died in his throat.
His legs were under the white hospital blanket that covered him from the chest down, but something was visibly wrong. His right leg looked normal, he could visually trace the outline from his thigh to his knee to his calf and all the way down to his foot. But his left leg… His eyes darted to the top of his thigh and traced down, like if he started over it could change what he saw. But it didn't.
A little under his left knee, it just… stopped. There seemed to be nothing under the blanket, and it just lay over the hospital bed, flat and uninterrupted. Distantly, Buck could hear the beeping of his heart monitor pick up as he tried to force his brain to work, to make sense of what he was seeing.
OR

His mind was swimming, drunkenly drifting from thought to thought. Though, at the current moment, he really only had one thought. Eddie.
Eddie had shown up, even though it was late—well, early now, according to the clock on the dash.
Buck shifted as he heard the driver's side door open, and he opened his eyes as Eddie shoved a plastic bag into his hands.
"Do not puke in my car," Eddie said sternly as he buckled his seatbelt. "I don't want to drive with that smell all day tomorrow."
Eddie how shown up tonight, but he was leaving. Soon. Today.
OR

Summary
Icy fear mixed with burning rage and Eddie spit in Richard's face. "Stay away from my family," he snarled, struggling in his bonds like a trapped wild animal.
Richard's fist snapped out and connected with Eddie's nose with a sickening crack. Pain exploded through Eddie's face and he couldn't help but cry out, blinking the automatic tears from his eyes.
"Then tell me where mine is," Richard demanded, wiping the spit from his cheek. Gone was any enjoyment he had been taking in this. Now, his fury was tripled and plain not just in his eyes, but also on his face.
"They're not your family, they were your victims," Eddie said lowly, tasting the blood that was leaking from his nose.

Summary
"I have had worse," Eddie acknowledged. "I just…" His lips twitched in a wry grin that somehow just made Buck more nervous. "I had a dream the other night, one where I died on shift. Some people would take that as a sign."
"You don't believe in signs," Buck countered, feeling like his ribs were about to crack from the sheer effort of holding in his panic. He felt claustrophobic suddenly. He needed them both out of this fucking wreckage, needed Eddie to stop talking like this.
"You told me once that the universe was screaming at me." Eddie opened his eyes, tilting his head a little to look at Buck. There was something so achingly intense mixed with the pain in those brown eyes that Buck loved.

Summary
That shut Ravi up, but Buck gave Eddie a scowl. "I am not off my game. Picking up extra shifts doesn't mean I'm not sleeping."
He hadn't been sleeping, but none of them needed to know that. He just couldn't bear the nightmares. Every time he fell asleep, he was right back at that lab, watching his loved ones die. It wasn't always Bobby, sometimes it was one of the others on the 118. Sometimes it was even more irrational, with Maddie or Christopher behind that glass. It was only when he passed out from sheer exhaustion that his subconscious stopped torturing him.
"I think he said that because of those bags under your eyes, Buckaroo," Hen said, tone a little more gentle than it usually would be. "You do look pretty tired."
OR
Buck can't sleep, despite how exhausted he is.
