Summary
The camera-view panned up, to the treetops, baring a night sky lit by furious red. The land was ablaze, yes, obliterated, but above it hung something else, frozen mid-fall. It looked like a meteorite or an asteroid, a falling star, plunging, wreathed in furious fire and sparks, except… no, wait; those were engine-cones, three of them…
“An L1R1-class hypersonic transport,” Callaghan finished for her. “Hundred-thirty-five-tons, anywhere on Earth in under eight hours; one-hundred-and-six-million dollars new, each. And that’s excluding the payload, or the loss in revenue caused by the operational lack of one, which I’m sure, as someone so perceptive, you noticed."
The incident on the island triggers many discussions at Universal Dynamics; this is one of the last.
