“Guess it doesn’t matter as long as Abbot saw them.” Trinity waves her hand casually.
“Funny.” The word comes out clipped. Samira holds the syllables close to her chest.

Summary
Jack Abbot’s face is too soft and weathered to be very stern. He narrows his eyes.
“You’re not on thin ice yet, Kwon. But watch your step.”
This should sound like a threat and an admonishment. It would probably make Javadi and Whitaker throw up if it were Dr. Robby saying it.
But Abbot’s voice is too warbly and warm. Too fatherly.
She accidentally smiles.

Summary
The nightmare comes for him the old way—mean and sudden, like a hook in the dark.
Kaz wakes choking on it.
The room is wrong. The air smells like clean linen and rain instead of rot and river-sludge. For a breathless, terrible second, his mind insists this is a trick. He expects the press of bodies, the creak of a boat that never stops rocking. He expects Jordie’s weight. The stink of plague. The water.
His fingers curl, grasping for a cane that isn’t there, for something solid enough to anchor him to the present—but the present won’t settle. The past surges up instead, sharp as broken glass.
Don’t let go. Don’t—
He drags in air through his teeth. It hurts. His heart is galloping, a traitor, pounding like it wants out of his chest. Sweat slicks his spine. His body is already braced for pain that hasn’t arrived yet.
“Kaz?”

Kaz Brekker wakes up from the recurring nightmare where he's once again sinking to the bottom of the canals, into a body ten years older, that has grown and progressed and healed and weathered. But the nightmare has reduced him to his former self, all that work he's done slipping away.Bookmarked by Affectionate_bagel
