    Under the stress of the Sunshot Campaign, Wèi Wúxiàn and Jiāng Chéng marry to rectify a lapse, although for Wèi Wúxiàn he couldn’t imagine doing it with anyone else. They make the best of it, and Wèi Wúxiàn is sure they can make it work, until the new life they made doesn’t come into the world alive.

    Now, instead of returning to the hard-won Lotus Pier in triumph, they return with a tiny box of ashes and a pressure to move on. Doing so seems to require making another new life, so they do, but neither of them is prepare for how much the loss of their first child will impact everything about the second.
