A story full of passion and dread, fascinating and compelling characters and story that is expertly crafted. It will have you on the edge of your chair all the way through, and the end is like the sun coming out.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Not finished yet, but the chapters are coming quickly and astolat isn't the sort of author to leave off a half finished story.

I've never seen Game of Thrones, and I read the books decades ago, so my memory of the events is sketchy at best. It was a little hard to get into it at first; there are so many complex characters that it was hard to focus on any one of them. But the writing is brilliant and the action just doesn't end. It didn't take long to get completely caught up in the characters' lives.

There are no black or white characters. I appreciate the way astolat takes characters who might ordinarily be written as sickeningly sweet (the dedicated healer from humble origins who won the love of a king) and makes her a more tolerable and sympathetic character because of her flaws. She knows what they are, but remaining true to herself keeps her true to her flaws as well, and there's no real cure for that.

And then there's the seemingly self-centered character who is cunning and brilliant and seems to do nothing but sit back and cause trouble for others, just because she can, and because she is surrounded by her enemies, and then suddenly she just *unfolds* into something far more, and it gives me goose bumps watching her use her brilliance and strength for good, even though she's doing it for her own reasons.

A very long and well written story. Hot in all the right places, but so sweet. A satisfying ending.

I thought vampires and werewolves had been done to death, but astolat has made a number of tweaks to her world that make it surprising and fresh. As always, she doesn't just write fanfic scenes, she tells a complete story, full of mystery and surprises and moments that will make you grab for a kleenex.

Her heroes are extraordinary, but at the same time they're just a couple of guys, very relatable. Brian especially breaks all the vampire stereotypes and gives the story a welcome reality. I appreciated that the story was about a group of people trying to make the most of what cards they had been dealt, not about the tragedy of supernatural existence or vampire/werewolf politics.

"Are you going for the course?" Lovegood asked. "You have the NEWTs.”

“What course?” Draco said, then, “No, don’t be ridiculous,” when he realized she meant the notice pinned up on the board he’d been staring at: Applicants To The Introductory Mediwizard Course For The Coming Term Shall Present Themselves In The Chief Mediwizard’s Office By August 24th.

“Oh, I thought you might,” she said. “Well, goodbye.” And off she wandered again in her addled way.

Lovely story, a bit unusual in that the pairing almost seems like an afterthought, but the story is satisfying enough that I didn't mind.

    Summary

Hermione frowned. “The real question is why the magic of Britain would be failing now, in fact.”

“That is not the real question!” Ron said loudly; he’d woken up fully by now, and Harry had too; it was starting to sink in that they’d found the problem. “The real question is, how do we fix it?”

    Bookmarker's Notes

It's been a while since I read something I felt like bookmarking. This almost had the feel of a fairy tale, but it never felt predictable. Astolat has always been one of my favorite writers, ever since I discovered her story, The Maiden Voyage of the Tiresias. I was pleasantly surprised to find her on AO3, and enjoyed many of her fanfics immensely. This one, like most everything that she writes, is a beautifully crafted story that is set in a fanfic world but doesn't depend on that fanfic to be a good story.
