When told of the news that Aspertia City's Pokémon Center was not receiving enough power to maintain quality 24/7 service, nurse-in-training Holly finds herself distraught. Twenty years old, she had always dreamed of either being a Pokémon Trainer or one of the nurses who heals those majesties of nature. Personal Thoughts (Spoilers!)

I love the way Holly is written. Her fears, hopes, and dreams are clear to the reader, and it makes her a relatable (to me), sympathetic protagonist to cheer on. She wears her emotions on her sleeve, and the love and care she exhibits when dealing with Zoey is emotional, and well-written imo, tying in nicely with her background as a nurse and prospective trainer (later actual trainer).

I liked the first battle, it was a clear show of her inexperience combined with her know-how on medical care and Pokemon in general. It also showcased her mindset very well. Right after, she gets into another which she does win with ease, which also does clue her into how much work is necessary to win a gym battle.

With some "grinding", she boosts her confidence in winning two battles against other trainers. Finally, she seems one step closer to being the person she wants to be, a much stronger version of herself. I think her increased resolve is shown during the battle against Cheren, where she waves away the (understandable) tears after Zoey gets hurt, refocusing on the fight, and defeating Patrat (a reoccuring Mon here I notice). A concerning moment when Zoey goes down, but despite being hurt and twitching on the ground, she manages to get back up for the battle. Showcasing her resolve and bond with Holly. This duo would do anything for the other, as Holly even broke into the Pokemon center in-order to retrieve a pokeball and help Zoey. Following this, she manages to win the battle against Cheren, largely due to her incredible bond with Zoey (a Zubat if I haven't mentioned). She receives her first badge, and leaves for the next stop.

Another showcase of her Pokemon knowledge, when she uses Zoeys hearing to help find the rest of Vivian's team. Vivian is another nice character, she bonds with Holly in the lead-up to their fight with eachother, then after the battle Vivian calls Holly "soft" as a compliment, a trainer who cares for her team sincerely. Unfortunately for Holly, this cuts deep. We go back to her background, her initial failures as a trainer, her tears, her parents who are actual trainers, and who she looks up to, trying to be as strong as them one day, to follow in their footsteps. This hits home for me, especially with how well-written it is. She "sleepwalks" through a set of battles, before accidentally scaring her Pokemon, who comfort her after she breaks down. Freshened up, she beats Roxie to earn a second badge. Now, she regains some confidence. It seems like a whole new world is open to her, and she can be as strong as she wants to be.

She bumps into Vivian again on her next stop, and the two rekindle their friendship after apologizing to one another, and meeting a hurt Vulpix. Investigating, they find the cause--an animal abuser. Pokemon caged up, neglected. The person behind it all uses 7 Pokémon, which is against the rules, and ties into the next battle--which is practically Love vs Abuse, Care vs Neglect. Holly exemplifies this by starting the battle protecting the hurt Vulpix. Arriving on the scene, Cheren figures out this has to be a criminal organization.

Then, we have some Holly x Vivian. The pair's relationship is well-written, and they clearly have much in common. Vivian works as a clerk, desperately wanting to be a real trainer. Holly knows the feeling well, and tells her she can follow her dreams, that a whole world is open to her. More than that, she will help.

This is very rambling, and I just wrote all of this while reading through. Apologies for that, but this is a really good story and I would recommend it. Based off my experience with another story from this author, they've clearly grown since this (some of the prose in this story is a little awkward), but even still I believe this is a good story, with a well-written, sympathetic, relatable and understandable protagonist surrounded by a decent sidecast. It is sad and emotional, it is hopeful and wonderful. I would recommend it to anybody who likes Pokemon.

    Summary

16 characters have been stolen from time and space and forced to play the deadliest game of Werewolf they've ever experienced. Xiaomu states that she's lived through this horror before. Will this be the game where the cycle is finally broken? Why are things the way they are? Is escape possible for all of the participants? Or are all sixteen doomed to a life of repeated deaths and failures?

NOTE: Even if you don't recognize all the major characters and fandoms, I still recommend this story if you like a good murder mystery.
