The ticking is incessant in his ears, cranked up way louder than anyone with normal hearing would hear it. “Petey?” Peter looks up from where he fell onto his knees, lifting one hand off the floor to rest at his knee.
Morgan stared back at him, looking scared and confused. “What’s going on?”
Peter doesn’t answer.
Because all that’s going through his head is the remembrance that Morgan was in this mess with him.
“Mr Stark?” Peter speaks in his head like the man in question was inside it, “I’ll protect her this time. I swear.”

Pepper’s talking to him, trying to reassure him that it wasn’t his fault. Tony knows that. He doesn’t bother listening though.
Because as much as everyone is trying to get that concept through to him. Tony knows. Knows as he stares at the rock that he swore to May would never exist. Listens to Michelle’s sobbing (scary girl can cry!?). He knows that it is.
He’s been replaying what he said to Peter that day all night. What if he didn’t say it? Would it make any difference? Or would this have never happened?
Would his son still be here?
