For the very first time in Penelope’s seven years of life, her world had been irreparably shaken, and her heart was leaping like it never had before. The moment itself was breathtaking, and judging from the way Colin Bridgerton had reacted, she could tell he felt the exact same.
He certainly wasn’t in love with her either, not in 1802 (not in 1803, 1804, 1805, or, blast, not in all the years 1810-1813, either, and certainly not in 1814, when he had been out of the country most of the time, anyway). But his earth had unquestionably shaken, his heart had leaped, and Penelope knew without a shadow of a doubt that his breath was taken away as well.
Or if it had been, it was at least for a good ten seconds, anyway.

Colin snatched up his die. “Okay.” He swallowed, his neck sweltering under his collar. “Roll to…kiss?”
A giggle raced around the table, eyes darting between Colin’s presumably florid face and Michaela’s mischievous one.
“Roll, or kiss her for real and call it a nat twenty,” Genevieve muttered loud enough for everyone to hear, hoisting her wine glass with a smirk at Michaela, who lifted her eyebrows in consideration.
“I’ll allow it,” Michaela ruled, nodding her chin once firmly at Genevieve before turning to smile fetchingly for Colin. “Your move, horny bard.”
