Summary
There’s no trace of exhaustion on Eddie’s face as he comes back, a paper tray with two coffee cups in one hand and a huge plastic jar of cheese puffs in the other.
“What is this?” Buck shakes his head. “How are you still hungry?”
“Road trip food.” Eddie makes a face, like Buck is the one being ridiculous. “You don’t have to be hungry. You just have to be on the road.”
Buck laughs and reaches for the jar. “I haven’t had these in forever.”
“Same,” Eddie says, popping the lid open. “No road trip in the Diaz family ever happened without them.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah.” Eddie laughs quietly, shaking a few into his palm. “We’d get cheese powder everywhere – seats, clothes, our faces. Our mom would get so mad every time. Make us clean up after.”
He looks down at his hand and adds, softer, “But the mess was always worth it.”

Summary
If Buck draws a line from the day of that earthquake until today, he’s pretty sure it would be as red as the string of fate and as strong as spidersilk. When he was living in Eddie’s house, Buck realised just how caught up in Eddie’s web he was and ran away, desperate to free Eddie from the depth of his emotions. Now, even though he’s moved out, a single smile from his best friend reels him back in, and he finds himself wishing for more time in Eddie’s orbit.
So when the ceiling collapses in on them, trapping him and Eddie inside the parking lot, there might be a tiny, microscopic chance that it’s Buck’s fault for jinxing them.
Or, a month after Buck moves out from Eddie's house, Buck and Eddie get trapped underground together during an earthquake and have a conversation that's long overdue.

“Who the hell are you?” An unknown voice asks. He doesn’t give Buck a chance to answer.
He hears Eddie from somewhere in the distance. “Wait!”
A third gunshot rings out, louder than before, closer than before.
One second, Buck’s feeling extremely grateful that Athena forced him into a bulletproof vest.
The next, he feels an explosion of pain in the side of his neck, and warm liquid spills down his chest.
