"You don’t have to," he said quietly.
The silence stretched between them, no longer sharp, no longer something she was desperate to fill with distance. It was just there, like an old friend. Familiar. Uncomfortable in the way truth always was.
Finally, Natasha turned her head to look at him again. Really look at him. The tired lines on his face, the pain weighing in his eyes. He truly meant every word.
So she let the fight drain out of her, just enough to say what she really meant. "I don’t want to shut you out," she admitted, her voice softer now. "I just don’t know how to not be angry."
Steve nodded like he understood. Like he’d been waiting for her to say it. "Then be angry." He held her gaze, steady, unwavering. "Just don’t go anywhere."

Natasha bought a dress specifically for this evening. She wanted to clean up nicely…for no particular reason. Just because. Not because it’s Steve’s special day and wanted to look pretty for him, no… That’s ridiculous.

Natasha only buys a dress, so Steve can take it off at the end of the night.
