Gwyn has been a ward of the kingdom of Night since losing her mother and sister as a young girl. Now, too old to remain in the lonely orphanage she grew up in, she must make her own way in the world. Fortunately, she's found a good position in the Royal Archives. Unfortunately, her boss is a witch determined to make her life hell.
Prince Azriel is no prince at all. Adopted into the royal family as a boy, he would never be in line to rule, but his brother insisted on giving him the title anyways. Now that the king has married, he's determined to see his brothers as happily settled. With their other brother, Cassian, already embroiled in a doomed pursuit of the queen's older sister, the king and queen decide to turn their attentions to Azriel instead. When he refuses to entertain any of the pretty, vain candidates they attempt to throw at him, they change tactics, ambushing him with a grand plan he has no hope of escaping.
The king and queen announce their plans to host a royal ball to find a wife for the mysterious Prince Azriel. And every eligible maiden in the kingdom is invited to try her luck at a chance to win a prince.
