Rupert knew an exact inventory of what is tucked between the notebook pages.
Two receipts dated several months apart, one for a 24 Karat gold bracelet, the other a small Fabergé egg. A page from The Scorpion dated the 31st of May 1987, the headline reading “Rupert Caught In Car Clinch With Cook” and a photo of Taggie O’Hara asleep on a sofa in the front lounge of Penscombe.

Taggie is apologetic about it, but somehow, he’s not. Somehow, he can’t stop smiling as he walks away from her in the gravel drive.
Indeed, she's different. A challenge to his vanity, a pretty little upset in the monotony of Rutshire—all the dreadful toffs and politicking and insincerity.
And he finds that he doesn’t actually mind having her around. He might, strangely, even enjoy it.
