“You know I wouldn’t, right?” He blurts out the words before he can help himself, though he knows she does, but part of him has to ask. Because he doesn’t know if it’s out of her sheer confidence in the fact that he, despite knowing, could not bring himself to do that.
Or whether it’s his own damned need for her confirmation, for trust that has no foundation, no reason to be as comforting as it is.
He reaches out, almost without thinking, and takes her hand in his own. He wonders if it’s selfish of him.
