    He’s never cried this much in his life, never thought he had a legitimate reason to, never even considered that he ever would. Something heavy and warm closes around his throat, clasping with a small click and Darius makes a self-satisfied noise. His hands shoot out to grab at the fabric, to tear it away from him, but hesitate when instead of brushing fine silk they find cotton. It’s high quality, as expected because this is Darius’ cloak, but it's so different from the Golden Guard cape that his hands grip the fabric tighter instead of ripping it from his throat. The weight of it is both a painful reminder and a terrible comfort.

    Then, softly, “I’ll take care of it, so please stop fighting me.”

    Looking at the man is difficult, but Hunter manages it. He looks very serious, like he's in a meeting or negotiating for something important. It almost makes his laugh; why would Darius need any amount of agreement from Hunter?

    “I promise.”

    He didn’t ask Darius to, but maybe that’s what makes him believe it more.

    "Enough," Darius snaps, and it's a sharp bark, promising pain. Hunter flinches back despite himself. The move stretches the skin at his side further, wound straining, but he swallows his hiss. He stands very, very still. To draw attention here, to broadcast his weakness, would not be wise.

    Darius watches him, something cold and inscrutable flickering through narrowed eyes, his nostrils flaring slightly as he breathes in deep. "Enough, Little Prince," he says, and the words are more soft, and all the more dangerous for it.

    .

    Hunter fails a mission, faces severe punishment from the Emperor, and then runs into Darius, which (in his estimation) might be the worst part of his night.

    “I just meant that-” His stomach feels twisted in a knot, as if someone had grabbed it and squeezed, and he can almost hear it grumbling in displeasure at the predicament that Hunter has gotten himself into, but… the sudden cold that comes to him like a revelation all over his still overheated face almost makes him dizzy.

    That’s not his imagination.

    “Hunter… are you hungry?” Darius asks gently

     

    Or: Five times Darius feeds Hunter and one time Hunter does the same for him.

    The faces in the house are unfamiliar, but he suspects he should know them. He sees the way they all look at him with that strange sort of pity in their eyes, the way they usher him off to bed to avoid having to explain things. He's not dumb - he's knows that something's not right, that he shouldn't be here.

    But he doesn't know anything more than this, so why should he question it?
