“You don’t think I’m angry with you?” Sonny asks, and inhales on the realization like a drowning man taking his final breath. His hold on Tom’s shirt tightens, then softens. He smooths over the rumples his own hands had made in the fine cotton. “Tom, Tommy. I could never be angry with you, never. You know that. It was an accident, that’s all.”
Tom wants to laugh, even though the situation isn’t funny. An accident was breaking your Ma’s favorite vase, tearing through the house after your brothers, or riding the bus two stops too far and being late for dinner.
Kissing Sonny hadn’t been an accident.
