Summary
"In their latest hideout, Erik Lehnsherr (not Henryk Gurzsky. Never again would he use that name) stood with En Sabah Nur and the other Horsemen, his mind blissfully blank. It seemed to be that way a lot lately, with wide gaps in time where he couldn’t recall what he did. The days blurred together, and for that, he was eternally grateful. To be able to stay above the bottomless ocean of grief in his head—no, his very soul—was a blessing.
Already, the memories of his girl’s faces seemed duller, though he only lost them a short time ago. And so he stood, once again doing the bidding of another, a dog on a leash. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to care as he would have before. The once seemingly endless abyss of rage had been replaced by unimaginable grief and loss. So, it was a relief to not feel and to drift with no coherent thoughts. To simply exist.
However, another person seemed to be infiltrating the fog of his mind. An achingly familiar presence which reminded him of long-ago chess matches dissolving into discussions of philosophy and days on the road ending with cheap motels.
