Her mouth upticks in a shy smile before they both look away. It doesn’t last. Eddie is like a moth to a flame, and he looks at her one more time. He huffs a laugh when their eyes meet again. Another cheerleader calls her name, and she startles before finally turning away. Eddie shakes his head at the idea that her smile might have actually meant something other than kindness, something like hope.
