Summary
Harry Potter fans have a history of using fanfiction to fix representation fails in JKR's canon. These fics usually have JKR's support. JKR tweeted in support of Black Hermione and "announced" gay Dumbledore. She's fine with race and sexuality for her characters being speculated on. However, we all know she is less okay with trans peoples' identities being validated.
There are three ways this could go, after JKR's transphobia being exposed:
1. the percentage of Harry Potter fanfiction being produced with trans representation decreased out of respect for the author's beliefs.
2. the percentage of Harry Potter fanfiction being produced with trans representation stayed the same because the author's political opinions do not impact how fans enjoy the books.
3. the percentage of Harry Potter fanfiction being produced with trans representation increased out of sheer spite and in an outpouring of community support for our trans or gnc fellow fans. (My hypothesis.)This is the research paper I wrote on the subject for my Media and Politics final, shared at the request of several friends, both IRL and online.
