There was a dramatic pause and Rumi was just about ready to whip out her phone and look it up herself before Zoey continued. “The hat rule used to just mean basic etiquette for wearing a stetson but now it basically means ‘if you wear a cowboy hat, you have to ride the cowboy. In your case, the cowgirl.”

Rumi gave a fist bump to her first base coach before stripping off her elbow pad and handing it over. She took two strides off the bag, a modest lead but enough where she could dive back if the pitcher dared to throw over for a pickoff.
She dug her spikes into the dirt, the sliding mit wrapped tight on her right hand. The left hander on the mound stared her down from her set position. A pair of sharp brown eyes met hers, a set she remembered fondly as a teammate now as the competition.
I dare you to run on me.
The challenge was issued. Rumi leaned into her right foot, waiting for the pitcher to start her motion. She saw the front foot lift and took off towards the second base bag.
