Summary
The first thing that made Wilhelm think that maybe attending Hillerska wouldn’t be the worst experience of his life was the fact that he could be on the rowing team, just like at his old school. Coxswains’ calls, the thunk of oars rolling over in their locks, the smell of lake in his clothes– these things were all familiar to him.
(The second thing, the thing that made him actually enjoy his new school, was Simon. But he buried that, for the time being.)
