Summary
Diego walks back into the still dark living room when he hears a noise from the couch. He circles around to the front and is both surprised and relieved to find Lila curled up and obviously asleep, tucked up against the comfortable upholstery. She must have been really tired, he thinks, because she didn’t even bother to take off her jacket, and he tries not to indulge the twinge of annoyance at the fact that she’s also still wearing her boots.

Summary
“I kind of liked it,” says Diego, quietly, hours or days later. He says it so quiet Lila almost misses it. A mere breath on the air. The beat of a butterfly wing. On her side of the bed, she sits up, ramrod straight. Diego’s – their – blankets wrap around her middle, pooling, tightening. She wriggles, and they fall away.
(“What do we do now?”
“Live our lives.”)
Lila reaches out a hand, and wraps her fingers around his wrist. “What,” she whispers, quiet enough to match his volume, gentle enough not to spook him, “are you talking about?”
Diego hums. “Being a—a f—father,” he mutters, after a long moment. “Being a father, to Stan.”
