    Summary

Long ago, the city now known as Old Lumière prospered, watched over by a benevolent sorceress known as The Paintress. Then came the drought. And the famine. And the people began to blame their sorceress for their misfortune. They set fire to her mansion, killing her only son. Unable to heal him, the sorceress did the only thing she could to save him - she cast a curse. From that moment on, he became a terrible creature, the outward manifestation of the worst parts of himself. The city fell, overrun with cursed monsters. And a clock began ticking down. If, within a century, the creature that had once been Verso could find his soulmate, he would be returned to life. But if a hundred years pass without a soulmate being found the curse would take every last descendent of Old Lumière.

“Surely you know about soulmates,” Monoco says, disapproval clear in his voice.
And Gustave does know about soulmates. The thing about soulmates is that they are incredibly rare. Because not only did both souls have to be compatible, both had to be willing, too. They had to choose each other. No coercion, no ulterior motives, just… choice. And who would ever choose to love a monster?

    Summary

In the aftermath of Dottore’s fall and her own ascension Columbina has a lot of time to think. Of what it means to be Nod Krai’s protector. Of how to heal the deep scars in the land. Of how to grieve someone who was never meant to leave.

    A living witness.

She thinks of the hours spent wandering the frozen tundra, Sandrone always there when she returned. She thinks waiting to watch the Korolevskiy Troupe together, their hands clasped. She thinks of the way Sandrone moved through her workshop with surprising grace for someone with her temper.

perhaps that was an adequate description after all

    Summary

Sandrone has always considered herself as someone ruled by logic, not emotions. When she gets annoyed or frustrated, it is because the recipient of it has earned her wrath. Columbina, with her laughter and teasing and lack of manners, is just someone who knows how to push all of her buttons. To think, for even a single moment, that there might be something more to all of it is a ridiculous thought. Or so Sandrone has to remind herself every time the Moon Maiden steals a glance at her.

    Summary

“I just… decided to drop by. If that’s okay. Feel free to kick me out.”

    (“Please don’t kick me out.”)

Gustave tilts his head, studying him. Worry in his gaze is visibly winning over everything else. Verso feels almost exposed — too open, too easy to read; it’s always like this with Gustave.

It’s almost comforting, with Gustave. Like a permission to stop hiding.

Or: healing is not linear. Verso knows it all too well.

    Summary

He plunges his sword into the ground — a familiar, practiced motion. The world pauses for a moment, and he sees the purple threads of blighted chroma ensnaring Gustave; pulls, yanking them towards himself. The pulsing chroma freezes for a second, tightening around the engineer. Then, like a pouncing predator, jumps at Verso.

The world starts moving again. A wave of nausea and fatigue almost knocks Verso to the ground, and it’s a miracle that he manages to dodge the next attack.

Gustave is staring at him, trying to process what just happened.

    “Run,” Verso croaks.

Or: 5 times Verso carried Gustave’s burden and the 1 time Gustave carried his.
