Summary
Max isn’t your typical fifteen-year-old.
She’s an android—engineered in secret by her grieving scientist parents after the death of their real daughter. But Max doesn’t know that. She believes she’s just… different.
Smarter. Stronger. Faster. And lonelier.
Navigating high school is brutal. Max struggles to connect, her uncanny instincts and awkwardness making her a target—until Chloe Price, the school’s golden girl, steps in. Their friendship begins as a joke, the result of a lost bet. But what starts as obligation slowly deepens into something real.
For Chloe, that growing bond is terrifying. Especially once she discovers Max isn’t human.
When Max learns the truth—about her origins, about Chloe’s lie—she’s forced to confront everything she thought she knew. Is she just a machine built to mimic love and pain? Or can she choose who she becomes?
As betrayal and identity collide, Max must decide: will she shut down emotionally, or fight to protect the fragile humanity she’s begun to claim?

Summary
After the breakup with her longtime partner Chloe Price, Max drifts into a quiet limbo. She spends a few months under her parents’ roof, restless and untethered, before packing up her life and hitting the road—state to state, chasing something she can’t yet name.
She finds it, unexpectedly, in a dusty service station off a forgotten highway. Nicholas, ten years old and running from a home steeped in abuse, latches onto Max with quiet desperation. She resists at first—furious, frightened, unprepared to become a fugitive and a mother. But something in Nicholas cracks her open.
As the miles roll by, Max begins to love him fiercely, protectively, as if he were her own. Together, they build a fragile sanctuary on the run.
Then one night, outside a bar glowing with old ghosts, Max runs into Chloe. The past rushes in. Can love be rekindled in the wreckage—or is this the moment Max finally lets go?

Summary
There, printed in black and white, was a missing persons poster. Max felt the air get sucked out of her lungs as her eyes followed the lines of details printed along the side of the page. She felt the ground beneath her begin to shift as she forced herself to look at the photo that stared back at her. The photo showed the steely eyes of someone that made Max’s stomach turn. She looked older now, her hair short, her features angular and set with the attitude of a sharp knife. Although she looked way different than Max remembered, there was no mistaking who it was.
Chloe Price.
