Phryne Fisher did not give up, she reminded herself as her fingernails scrabbled at the edge of the barrel in search of leverage. Even as her vision began to dim and splinters dug their way into her palms and her movements grew more sluggish without oxygen to fuel them, she continued to struggle against her attacker, hoping against all hope that this wouldn’t be the last fight of her life.

Summary
A Murder and the Maiden tag.-- As in the next episode Jack seems to be seriously considering being a *policeman married into a mob family* as the safe, low-drama option to whatever the heck is going on with Miss Fisher, I think their post-case nightcap might have been a little fraught.

When it came to danger, Jack ran a sort of gauge, or meter, in his mind—and right now the needle on that gauge was fast approaching the red. He looked down at Phryne’s intent head as she worked to free him and was seized by an irrepressible, bittersweet fondness. She really was brilliant.
“You know what I’m going to say.”
“I’m sure I don’t,” she muttered, focused, “but whatever it is is out of the question.”
