Summary

After a teenage fisher boy named Valerio is made into a war orphan, he knows that now there is only one way he can be at peace: through bloodshed.

Summary
For a godlike being that watches over the humans of Earth every day, the Narrator sure doesn’t understand them and their ways. And when the Great War finally comes to an end, he decides he wants to get to the bottom of why humans act the way they do.
So, after striking a deal with his fellow deity, the Curator, the two decide to travel to Earth together and live among humanity for a while, under one condition: they are not to get attached to any human or aspect of human life. But when the Narrator meets Stanley, a mute former soldier who fought in the Great War, one fateful day six years after first coming to Earth, he begins to find that this condition is getting harder and harder to keep. And with the Curator watching his every move, he has to find a way to keep their blossoming friendship a secret.
But the Curator is hiding something, too, something about a woman she meets named Mariella. And as the two deities try to assimilate into human life in the roaring 1920s, they’ll have to make a choice that will determine their duties — and change their lives — forever.
