“Oh, Hereld. Thank you. Thank you,” said the newcomer babbled, weeping, holding her hands over her head. “You are as great as they say. Thank you.”
Right as Viktor was going to take her hands and accept her veneration, a voice raspy with disuse said from behind, “You did always revel in being worshiped.”
Viktor whirled, heart rising into his throat. “Jayce, you’re awake.”
He held his hammer slackened at his side. “Yes. And I’m leaving. Goodbye, Herald,” he practically spat before walking past, heading for the gate with a limp.
“Wait.” Viktor passed off the woman to a follower who was seasoned in acclimating new members, then hastened after Jayce. When he caught up to his side, he said, “You must stay, rest. You’re in no condition to be going anywhere.”
“There’s nothing I must do but prepare.”
“Prepare for what?”
Jayce stopped in his tracks at the gate and took in the field of yellow wildflowers rolling in a gentle breeze. A flicker of wonder sparked in his eyes, but then a beat later, it faded. “For you.”
