The sound of hoofbeats woke Kate from a deep sleep. It was late enough for the cheerful fire to be reduced to glowing coals, and she got up to throw another few logs on before the room could get chilly. As she used a poker to arrange the firewood, the sound of hoofbeats seemed to get closer. Kate walked to the window, but she knew what she would see when looking out into the night. Two stories below, a stableman with a lantern accepted the reins of a dark horse from an equally dark rider. Low masculine voices carried through the night as the lantern and horse walked out of sight. Her hand holding the heavy velvet draperies aside tightened, crushing the plush fabric in a vice-like grip.
The rider turned, his heavy greatcoat billowing as a strong wind caught the length. Even in the darkness, she knew that figure, the way he moved, and the profile of his face. Still, that face looked up at her in the shadow of his hat. Even though she couldn’t be more than a dark figure backlit by the fireplace, he recognized her too. A gloved hand touched his hat, tipping it before he strode to the door that opened for him.
Lord Anthony Bridgerton was home.
