Summary
All of fifteen and a lanky, awkward mess as he is, Arthur Morgan is hiding something from the gang that brought him in, the gang that gave him a home when none else would. The question is what, and why he's so afraid to admit it.
-
"There something you want to tell us, Arthur?" Bessie plays the softer touch, a hum embracing her wards with an encouraging warmth to match her smile.
"No," he croaks out and it's honest, but unhelpful. Susan gains certainty that something is amiss and the boy's honesty is borne of not wanting to be found out, not of any ignorance in his knowledge.
"Stop coddling the boy, Bessie," she suggests with a sharp edge that cuts at Arthur's failing resistance. "There is clearly something afoot and he knows more than he wants to let on about."
Tall as he grows with every passing week, Arthur tries to sink down, to withdraw like a turtle into a shell that don't exist. "Please don't make me," he tries, near as pleading that either of them have heard and the ladies exchange a look, words unspoken even as meaning carries through that they'll let him slip away.

Summary
Part of him knows Dutch and Hosea are getting frustrated about the lack of progress on finding the Braithwaite’s gold or the Gray’s treasure or whatever the hell it is. Part of him knows everyone is getting nervous about being in one place for so long. Part of him knows that Dutch is stressed and tired, that he’s probably just taking out his frustrations, that he probably doesn’t really mean what he’s saying…
But another, much bigger part of Arthur is stunned and indignant and hurt. And, like a wounded animal, the hurt quickly turns to rage.
“Well how ‘bout you go make us some money, Dutch?”
“…Excuse me?”
(Or: Arthur leaves.)

Whumptober 2019, Prompt #4: "Human Shield"
John, despite common belief, was no fool. He wasn’t the smartest boy. But he could tell when someone didn’t like him. It was a valuable skill on the streets, after all, and so even he could tell that Arthur Morgan didn’t like him.

Summary
Whumptober 2019, Alt. Prompt #14: "Touch-Starved"
Dutch hadn’t thought, had acted out of habit. When they’d stopped their horses, dismounted to let them drink and rest, he’d clapped Arthur on the shoulder (Hosea had hissed, drawing his breath) and pulled him in for a one-armed hug, booming “That was incredible, son!”
Dutch had frozen when he realized what he’d done, expecting Arthur to cower, or cringe, or even to bolt.
