Summary
Ranboo was starting to think that Puffy’s career had consisted of reading textbooks and watching TV shows depicting clean, neat caricatures of the people she was meant to treat. They were starting to think that she was used to treating people whose problems lay somewhere else, who only used buzzwords to draw attention to another issue they had.
She kept telling them that they had people who cared about them. She told them to try and talk to them, to start opening up to others. Ranboo would listen and nod, and feel bitter about it. They’d wonder which part was so hard to get. Yes, Techno and Phil cared about them—the version of them that they knew. They cared about Ranboo the artist, not Ranboo the voice-hearer. Ranboo, who asked questions and listened to their rambles, not Ranboo whose smile died as soon as they left the cabins. Ranboo who managed to make them laugh, not Ranboo who’d manufactured their own laugh and learned the rules of when and how and how much to use it.
