    "Anger had finally bubbled up at the surface and determined young Jiang Cheng had pressed on his wound with bitter resignation, as a form of punishment. Bile had burned his throat but at this point, he had forgone sleep and sanity. The pain sizzled up his leg, up and up past his stuttering heart, and right into his tired mind. It had silenced everything as effectively as Zidian tearing through flesh. He kept pressing on it curiously. He felt the stabs of pain dancing in tune with his pulse. His body had taken over for him. The thoughts receded as a primal part of his mind focused on the perceived threat, the pain thrumming quietly.

    Thump, thump, thump.

    Somehow he had finally succumbed to slumber. The next day to his severe disappointment the wound had healed and he had dismissed this bout of insanity as a conjuring of his tired mind.

    Yet, here he is, years later, chasing the same thrill, that glimpse of madness that calmed his racing mind. He hadn’t forgotten it. He couldn’t."
