She pinched her brows as she stared down the road ahead, before sighing wearily and canting her head to the side to peer at Max. “So. What do I call you now?”
Despite herself, Max breathed out a tiny laugh – a reluctant, weak thing – and answered. “It’s… Max. Still Max. But just Max now.”
A blink, then a sardonic grin, sharp and amused. “I’m surprised Auntie Van didn’t talk you into ‘Maxine’.”
“Ugh! Don’t even joke about that!”
She was answered with a rumbling chuckle as the girl in the driver’s seat put her eyes on the road again, and simply said, “Chloe.”
“Chloe,” Max repeated, murmured under her breath. It was a pretty name.
