Summary
Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a man.
To break him, you must first shatter his body—again and again and again. Then, you take his mind, his will, his name. You strip him down to something unrecognisable, reshape him into something he was never meant to be. Survival is its own kind of cruelty, and some wounds don’t heal. Some don’t even scar.
Because war doesn’t just take. It chews men up and spits them out as something else: hollowed beings, stitched haphazardly, and left to stumble forward. No side is ever truly victorious, not when the battlefield becomes a graveyard, and the survivors are left carrying its ghosts. No matter who wins, the cost is always the same: the weight of what can never be undone.
All wars end the same.

This is the story of Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, and the Howling Commandos. The war they fought. The men they lost. The scars they carried. The love that blooms, even in the darkest of places, far behind enemy lines. Before the ice. Before the Winter Soldier.
Before it all got worse .

Summary
"You look like him," Bucky says. No prompting, no nothing. He just speaks, like this is a thing he does.
"What?" Steve asks. He didn’t really hear it, too stunned by the fact that words were coming out of Bucky’s mouth to understand their meaning.
"You look like him. So did Pierce." His voice is soft, gravelly from disuse. "Is that why they picked you?"
Steve’s heart plunges like an elevator with the cables cut. “Buck, it is me.”
The hard line of Bucky’s mouth softens just a little. “Sure,” he says. -

Summary
“You know, if you’d planned to come back as a legendary LGBTQ+ icon, you could’ve given us a heads up, Cap,” Sam says drily.
“Was it as awesome as it looked?” Bruce asks.
“Steve thumbs his lower lip thoughtfully and smiles, “Best kiss of my life."

Summary
“Where’s your boy-toy?” Sam asks, barely five minutes into his visit.
“Sam,” Steve groans, exasperated and maybe a little scandalized. His rational mind is aware that Sam doesn’t know anything. He just said that because he and Bucky have a vaguely antagonistic friendship with its own set of complicated rules, one of which seems to be that they will never, in any situation other than explicitly life-threatening, call each other their actual names or anything else that can be construed as nice or affectionate.
It confuses Steve as often as it amuses him, but on this occasion, embarrassed shock overtakes both.
Sam slants him a narrow-eyed look that’s a little too knowing for comfort.
“I see I’m not wrong.”
Steve turns on his heels and gracefully nopes out of that conversation.

Summary
Steve’s never been a coward. He returns the space stone first.
He doesn’t strangle Zola and leave him to rot, though he wants to. And it would be easy to just—tap his GPS and leave, but he’s helpless not to retrace his path from the last time. It’s harder because there are people looking for a man with Steve’s build and coloring, but the first thing he did when he materialized in this reality was tug on a face mesh, grimacing at the faint prickle of it settling over his features, changing and masking them.
Peggy’s not in her office this time. Likely for the best.
The old Steve, thin as a reed and with a scowl as big as his face, stands in a picture frame next to the one of Peggy’s family. Steve sets the compass in front of the man he used to be.
Inside, there’s a folded paper with a set of coordinates.
Steve drags in a breath that burns all the way down. He’s gone before he can change his mind.
